Subdivision Tree Planting

SPECIFICATIONS FOR SUBDIVISION TREE PLANTING

A supplement to the “General Specifications for the Construction of Roads, Bridges, and other Structures” of The Board of Genesee County Road Commissioners of the County of Genesee, Flint, Michigan.

Description:

This work shall consist of planting trees on any subdivision street or road under the jurisdiction of the Board of Genesee County Road Commissioners.

Requirements:

1. Permits – No trees shall be planted without a permit from The Board of Genesee County Road Commissioners.

2. Source and Habit – All trees must be nursery grown stock, pruned to encourage the development of a central leader and a symmetrical crown. They shall be uniform in height, with straight trunks, well-developed leaders, tops and roots. They shall be free from all insects, diseases, mechanical injuries, broken roots, or other objectionable features.

3. Time of Planting – Planting will be permitted only when the soil is workable and temperature and weather conditions are favorable; from April 1st to May 31st or October 1st to November 1st or when otherwise permitted by the Board’s forester.

4. Size and Species – Trees shall be 1-1/2” to 2-1/2” in diameter measured 6” above the ground, have a root spread of 16” to 22” and a height of from 10’ to 15’. Larger trees will not be permitted except under special authorization by the Board’s forester. The species to be planted will be selected from the following list by the Board’s forester on the basis of soil requirements and other technical factors:

                      1. Sugar Maple                                             8. European Sycamore
                      2. Norway Maple                                          9. Green Ash
                      3. White Oak                                                 10. Thornless Locust
                      4. Red Oak                                                    11. Sweet Gum
                      5. Scarlet Oak                                               12. Sour Gum
                      6. Pin Oak                                                      13. Hackberry
                      7. American Sycamore

Unacceptable species for reasons of habit, appearance, durability or
cleanliness are as follows
:

                              1. Poplar (Cottonwood or Aspen) 6. Soft Maple
                              2. Willow                                            7. Birch
                              3. Box Elder                                       8. Catalpa
                              4. Chinese Elm                                9. Ailanthus
                              5. Black Cherry

5. Tree Location – Trees are to be planted 10 ft. from the property line of a street 60 ft. in width. Tree planting adjacent to a main highway will require a specific location by one of the Board’s foresters. A minimum spacing of 40 ft. between trees planted on the above line will be required except as directed by the Board’s forester. A minimum distance of 20 ft. will be required from the property line of an intersection street.

6. Tree holes – Tree holes shall be dug 6” deeper and 12” wider than the root spread of the tree to be planted, to provide for the addition of topsoil and to retain the natural spread of the tree roots.

7. Top Soil – A good loam top soil shall be used in the planting of all trees. This soil shall be free from sticks, stones, sod or clods, or any other material which would tend to allow air pockets around the roots. The main root area shall be covered to a depth of at least 3” after the soil is tamped around the tree roots.

8. Planting – Each tree shall be planted plumb, 1 to 2” lower than the level at which it grew in the nursery. After compaction of the soil around the tree, the soil shall be saturated with water to completely wet and settle it around the roots.

9. Staking, guying and wrapping – Staking, guying or wrapping of all trees shall be required if so directed by the Board’s forester.

10. All state and local laws shall be observed in the procurement and planting of trees.
